Buying Guide: Where to Get Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5

Microsoft

It’s finally here: the next generation of home consoles can be yours today, if you look in the right place. Of course, this generation launching amidst a pandemic and with interest in home console gaming at an all-time high means that getting your hands on one of these systems is a bit more difficult than it would normally be.

So, if you’re looking to snag one of these consoles, here’s where you need to be shopping to scoop one up.

Xbox Series X

The Xbox Series X and its little sibling, the Xbox Series S, released on November 10. They’re widely available through major retailers, including Wal-Mart, Target, GameStop, and Best Buy.

The console is currently being stocked by Microsoft directly, as well as Amazon, so buying online is a great option for anyone who doesn’t want to brave the holiday shopping crowds. Notably, however, the console’s stock is hard to predict right now.

Most major retailers are currently out of stock of the new consoles, with restocks happening periodically. We encourage anyone looking for a Series X or Series S to be vigilant in checking major online retailers to see when restocks occur to get their order in quickly.

While this might be a frustrating scenario, it’s better than driving from store to store to find that the system is not in stock.

Microsoft is also offering a no-interest payment plan called Xbox All-Access. It’s a two-year payment plan that allows you to get either a Series X or Series S and pay a monthly fee, and it includes two years of Game Pass, the company’s excellent game streaming service.

PlayStation 5

Much like its competitor, the PS5 is a bit hard to find right now. The system will be restocked periodically on Wal-Mart’s website, at 3PM, 6PM and 9PM EST.

If you’re unable to find it there, you could also try calling local retailers to see if any of them have stock. However, keep in mind that Sony has insisted that the console will only be available online on launch day in order to combat in-store crowds during the pandemic.

Other retailers that might have the system in stock are GameStop, Best Buy, Target, and Sam’s Club. Make sure to check around to see if any of these retailers are stocking the system, and be vigilant about checking. Rest assured, you’re not the only person looking for one of these consoles!
